Statement Against the Nuclear Test by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

The Korean Central News Agency of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (herein after “North Korea”) reported today (May 25, 2009) that an underground nuclear test was successfully conducted.

At present, the governments of various countries are attempting to establish whether a nuclear test actually took place or not, but, being in disregard of the request by the United Nations Security Council to refrain from any additional nuclear tests, it cannot be sanctioned under any circumstances.

Sotoshu advocates “human rights, peace, and the environment.” As such, we oppose any activity that works against peace, such as this act by North Korea, as well as its previous nuclear tests and missile launches, and hereby express our alarm and regret. It is our strong hope that, in dealing with the other countries of the world, North Korea will not repeat this act, but will achieve a peaceful solution by way of dialog.
